Susan Woods’ Dancenter of Stoneham, Inc. was established in 1984 in a 1500 square foot facility on Montvale Avenue in Stoneham. It was one of the very first dance schools in the area to house a “real dance studio”, that is, a studio with appropriate flooring, mirrors, ballet barres, a professional sound system, dressing and waiting rooms, and a full service dancewear boutique. As most baby boomers and 40- somethings know, those of you who danced as kids probably grew up dancing in a V.F.W. hall or a church basement or in someone’s small studio-home. Some of our best dance educators came from those places. Nevertheless, Susan Woods was a pioneer in seeing her vision of running a professional, self-standing school come to fruition after several years experience teaching for and managing a few schools locally and in the city of Boston.

As a longtime Stoneham native with strong family ties to the community, Susan quickly grew her school to one of the most respected dance studios in the north suburban Boston area. The quality of dance education, the dedication to customer service and the family friendly atmosphere have always been ideals that students and their families have appreciated and come to expect at our school.

In 1989, when the school had outgrown its space on Montvale Ave., the Dancenter moved to its new, larger and more convenient, current location at 214 Main Street, again building out a state- of- the–art dance facility.   Over the years, Ms. Woods has operated three locations of Dancenters and one of the North Shore’s most prominent dancewear boutiques. The boutique, which supplies an endless number of local studios with all their dance needs, was recently relocated to its former home at 214 Main St, as an added convenience to our Stoneham studio families, and Susan has come full circle, passing on her other Dancenter locations as well, to return to a full time managing and teaching position at the Stoneham studio.

Over the past 26 years, thousands of dancers have not only received dance training of outstanding standards, but have experienced being part of the Dancenter family. It has always been our mission to pay attention to every student’s needs as a dancer and as an individual person. At the Dancenter, students are treated with respect by a staff whose goals are to train dancers, encourage a strong sense of self-esteem in them, and help foster healthy minds and healthy bodies. The life-long friendships that are built are an added bonus.

One of the greatest testaments to why our neighborhood dance studio has been so successful is the continued flow of new students who show up at our doors “because their friends have told us such great things about us”.  Another of our most impressive compliments is to see how many graduating Dancenter students return years later to register their own children with us. Also, in a world where nowadays, there seems to be a new dance studio on every block, we at the Dancenter are honored that so many of those new-kids-on-the block are dancers and teachers that we have trained and guided through their careers. We are flattered that they choose to directly model their schools and their philosophies after ours.  Susan Woods’  Dancenter of Stoneham prides ourselves on the reputation and experience of our business; we look forward to working with yet a new generation of dancers to come. Thank you to our loyal customers for continuing to trust us with your children’s dance educations.
